This handout will allow you to write and revise the statement that is personal by many graduate programs, internships, and special academic programs.

Before starting writing

Since the application essay may have a critical effect upon your progress toward a career, you should spend a lot more time, thought, and effort upon it than its typically brief length would suggest. It will reflect the way you arrived at your professional goals, why this program is >essay is clear, concise, and compelling. In the same time, don’t be afraid. You realize all the plain things you will need to say already.

  • The field. Why would you like to be a___ that is__? No, really. Think of why you and you particularly wish to enter that field. Exactly what are the benefits and do you know the shortcomings? When did you become enthusiastic about the field and just why? What path in that career interests you right now? Brainstorm and write these ideas out.
  • This program. Why is this the program you want to be admitted to? What is special concerning the faculty, the courses offered, the placement record, the facilities you might be using? They offer, go to events, or meet with a faculty member or student in the program if you can’t think of anything particular, read the brochures. A word about honesty here—you may have a good reason for selecting a course that couldn’t necessarily sway your reader; as an example, you intend to live near the beach, or perhaps the program is one of prestigious and would look better on the resume. You don’t want to be completely straightforward in these full cases and appearance superficial, but skirting around them or lying can look a whole lot worse. Turn these aspects into positives. As an example, you may want to head to a program in a specific location because it is a spot that you know very well and also have ties to, or while there is a need in your field there. Again, doing research regarding the program may reveal approaches to legitimate even your most superficial and selfish cause of applying.
  • Yourself. What details or anecdotes would help your reader understand you? The thing that makes you special? Will there be something regarding the family, your education, your work/life experience, or your values which has had shaped both you and brought you to this career field? What motivates or interests you? Do you have special skills, like leadership, management, research, or communication? Why would the known members of this program want to choose you over other applicants? Be truthful with yourself and write your ideas down. If you should be having trouble, ask anybody you like to make a summary of your strengths or unique qualities that you want to keep reading your own (and not argue about immediately). Ask them to offer examples to back their impressions up (For instance, if they do say you will be “caring,” ask them to spell it out an event they remember by which they perceived you as caring).
  • Now, write a draft

This is a essay that is hard write. It’s probably far more personal than any for the papers you have written for >essay, and write for 15 then or 30 minutes without stopping. What do you want your audience to learn after reading your essay?
